🎉 What to Bring to Your First Rave Festival: The Ultimate Packing Checklist

Going to your first rave festival is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. I still remember packing for my first festival over 10 years ago. I had no idea what I'd actually need and ended up bringing way too much of the wrong stuff while forgetting some of the most important essentials.

The good news is that you can learn from my mistakes.

After attending countless festivals, I've figured out exactly what's worth packing and what should stay at home. This guide covers everything I recommend bringing so you can stay comfortable, prepared, and focused on having the best weekend possible.

🎒 Start With the Right Bag

Before you even think about what to pack, you'll need something to carry everything.

Most festivals allow hydration packs, small backpacks, or clear bags, but every event has different rules. Always check the festival's bag policy before you leave home.

I usually recommend bringing:

  • A hydration pack

  • A lightweight backpack

  • A crossbody or fanny pack for valuables

Having your hands free makes dancing so much easier.

💧 Stay Hydrated All Day

If I could only give one piece of advice to first-time ravers, it would be this:

Drink water.

You'll likely be walking for hours, dancing nonstop, and spending time in the sun. Dehydration can ruin your entire weekend.

I always pack:

  • Hydration pack or reusable water bottle

  • Electrolyte packets

  • Refillable water bottle if permitted

Your future self will thank you.

🕶️ Protect Yourself From the Sun

Daytime festivals can get incredibly hot.

Even if the forecast looks mild, standing in direct sunlight for several hours is exhausting.

Don't forget:

  • Sunglasses

  • Sunscreen

  • Hat or bucket hat

  • Cooling towel if it's especially hot

Your skin will thank you after the festival.

🌬️ Bring a Hand Fan

A quality folding fan is one of the best festival purchases you'll ever make.

It keeps you cool while dancing, helps your friends cool off, and honestly becomes one of the most appreciated items in your group.

I've lost count of how many strangers have smiled after I fanned them during a packed set.

🧣 Pack Layers for the Evening

One mistake almost everyone makes at their first festival is assuming it'll stay warm all night.

Once the sun goes down, temperatures can drop surprisingly quickly.

I always bring:

  • A lightweight hoodie

  • A pashmina

  • Windbreaker if rain is possible

A pashmina is one of my favourite festival accessories because it keeps you warm, blocks the sun during the day, and even works as a pillow during breaks.

👟 Wear Comfortable Shoes

Please don't wear brand-new shoes.

Your feet will easily take 20,000 to 30,000 steps each day.

Choose shoes you've already broken in and pair them with comfortable socks.

Your feet will thank you by day two.

🔋 Keep Your Phone Charged

Your phone is your camera, your map, your way to contact friends, and sometimes even your festival ticket.

A dead battery can quickly become a stressful situation.

Always bring:

  • Portable phone charger

  • Charging cable

  • Fully charge everything before leaving

🎧 Protect Your Hearing

This is one of the most overlooked festival essentials.

Repeated exposure to loud music can permanently damage your hearing.

High-fidelity earplugs reduce the volume while still letting you enjoy the music clearly.

Trust me. Future you will appreciate it.

🩹 Pack a Small Emergency Kit

I never leave for a festival without a few emergency supplies.

My bag usually includes:

  • Bandages

  • Blister patches

  • Wet wipes

  • Hand sanitizer

  • Lip balm

  • Gum or mints

  • Hair ties

  • Tissues

These small items barely take up any space but can completely save someone's day.

🍎 Bring Some Snacks

Festival food is amazing, but the lines can be long and your energy levels can crash between meals.

I like bringing:

  • Protein bars

  • Trail mix

  • Beef jerky

  • Fruit snacks

Always check your festival's rules on outside food before packing.

✨ Don't Forget the Fun Stuff

Not everything has to be practical.

Some of my favourite festival memories came from the little things that helped connect with other people.

Consider bringing:

  • Kandi bracelets

  • Fun sunglasses

  • LED accessories

  • Festival hats

  • Colourful pashminas

  • Totem for your group if permitted

These accessories help express your personality and make meeting new people even easier.

🎵 Final Thoughts

Your first rave doesn't have to be stressful.

You don't need the most expensive outfit or every festival gadget on the market. Bringing the right essentials will keep you comfortable, safe, and ready to enjoy every set from start to finish.

Over the years, I've learned that the smallest items often make the biggest difference. A fan can cool down an entire group. A portable charger can save the day when someone's phone dies. A pashmina can keep you warm during a chilly walk back to camp.

Pack smart, look after your friends, and don't be afraid to help out a fellow raver if they need it.

That's what festival culture is all about.

See you on the dance floor. 💜
